ONE CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT- Half day training with the NCPC

Why this conference?

Secretary of State Andrew Lansley set out his vision for the future of care, stating "Patients will be at the heart of the new NHS. Our guiding principle will be 'no decision about me, without me'. We will bring NHS resources and NHS decision-making as close to the patient as possible".

Involving patients and carers in the development of end of life care services upholds and reflects the fundamental principles of palliative and end of life care, which are person-centred. As Cicely Saunders, the founder of the modern hospice movement, said: "You matter because you are you, and you matter to the very last day of your life".

Patient and public involvement will help to demonstrate that organisations providing palliative and end of life care services are actively responding to the challenges set out in the End of Life Care Strategy.

This conference will:

  • Highlight the importance of involving people in commissioning, designing and providing end of life care
  • Stimulate participants with ideas on how you can reach people in all corners of your community to improve care
  • Provide practical skills, equipping participants to involve people better
  • Provide a forum to hear how others involve people and the impact this has made

As at 4th January, FREE bursary places are available.

7th June 2012
7th World Research Congress of the EAPC

This is the seventh time that leading world researchers within palliative care gathers for the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) World Research Congress, and in 7-9 June 2012 the congress returns to its 2008 venue, Trondheim in Norway.

The abstract submission has recently opened, and the scientific committee hopes to receive many abstracts from all over the world, and from a variety of professions and specialities. Chair of the scientific committee, Per Sjøgren (Denmark), encourages researchers to submit their abstracts now, as "This is a unique opportunity to take part in shaping the scientific programme and to present your own research", says Dr Sjøgren.

In addition to submitted abstracts, there will be lectures from international experts, presenting cutting edge research within symptom control of pain, cachexia, cognitive failure and depression. In addition, research regarding basic research and clinical treatment will also be presented. Research methods and organisation of pallative care are other important subjects that will be given attention in the programme. - Palliative care researchs needs to have a broad approach – including family care. I am looking forward to take part in the congress, and to listen to presentations of new research findings. Hopefully these will contribute to the evidence base for the future, says Sheila Payne (UK), President of the EAPC.

The following are the plenary speakers:

  • Irene Higginson, Professor, King’s College, London
“Dying at home – is it better: what have we learned and where are we going?”
  • Eduardo Bruera, Professor, University of Texas
“The development of a research field over 25 years: Most important findings and their impact”
  • Gary Rodin, Professor, University of Toronto
“Research on psychological and social factors in palliative care: Contributions, controversies and impact on the field”

The planning of the congress has started, in co-operation with the palliative research networks that are being administered from Trondheim; the European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC) and the EAPC Research Network (EAPC RN), chaired by Professor Stein Kaasa.

About 1400 participants from 40 countries all over the world are expected to attend the congress. It will be the most important meeting point for everyone working with palliative care research in 2012.

Abstract submission deadline is 15 October. All information is found at www.eapcnet.eu/research2012.
