Narrative theme expands into new Methods Research theme for CECo
CECo is delighted to share the news that the CECO Executive team has taken the decision to expand the narrative theme in order to take full advantage of new funding opportunities in methods research, particularly in end of life issues, and to build on senior academics expertise in quantitative research.
The narrative theme has enjoyed great success in publications, education events, state of the science meetings and developing work with a range of research partners, clinicians and academics at protocol development meetings. Currently there are several projects under preparation for submission for funding as well as some wins already. The expertise and efforts of the active narrative theme members has been integral to its success and are recognized as such, not least in highlighting the importance of narrative methods for exploring supportive, palliative and end of life care issues. Special thanks are extended to these members and all who have supported the theme over the last two years. This important work is set to continue with the next protocol development meeting being planned for 2009.
Professor Chris Todd from the University of Manchester will be leading the new CECo Methods Research theme, supported in Manchester by Clare Stevinson and in Southampton by Janice Brown. He is enthusiastic to build on the success of the narrative theme and support developments and initiatives to expand work under the narrative/qualitative strand but in addition is bringing his expertise in quantitative approaches to take advantage of the MRC/NIHR Methodology Research Programme call for research into methods in end of life care research and to expand on work using the MRC framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions in supportive, palliative and end of life care. He is currently formulating the new mission statement for the Methods Research theme and will soon be posting further information on this site so watch this space!
This is an exciting development for CECo as it should expand interest not only in narrative methods but include a more eclectic range of methods suitable for investigating supportive, palliative and end of life care including mixed methods. We anticipate this new direction will increase the quality and quantity of research and researchers into supportive, palliative and end of life research supporting the original goals for this important collaborative.
The CECo web pages will be updated to reflect this development in the coming weeks. For more information, contact: Janice Brown

Complex Symptoms - 3rd State of the Science Meeting takes place on the 21st May 2009 (This item can also be found under Complex Symptoms news)
The State of the Science meetings are an excellent way of finding out about the state of the science in symptoms research. At the same time participants have the opportunity to contribute research ideas to the research agenda of the Symptoms Theme and to network with others in the areas. State of the Science meetings are open to everybody and have proved to be extremely popular. In previous years participants have included research partners, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, medical students, academics and researchers, both from the UK and abroad.
