PhD Studentship Opportunities at the School of Health Sciences, University of Southampton

The School of Health Sciences is a world class environment which focuses on the improvement of health outcomes and the transformation of health care delivery. It is one of the largest and most successful Schools in the UK, educating a wide range of non-medical health professionals and generating research of the highest quality.

The School offers superb facilities for teaching and research in one of the UK’s leading research Universities. The School was ranked 2nd in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise for Nursing and Midwifery. The School benefits from a superb environment for interdisciplinary research through the University Strategic Research Groups that bring together academics from across the University to focus on key contemporary concerns. There also exist important infrastructures to support health related research such as the Southampton Statistical Research Institute, ESRC’s National Centre for Research Methods, MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre, Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility and the NIHR Research Design Service.

The School’s research encompasses a vibrant set of activities of direct value to people and to health and social care organisations and with high impact. The School is the leading centre nationally and internationally for developing clinician researchers through the clinical academic careers initiative. The School of Health Sciences has been awarded NIHR centre status for Master’s preparation in research, one of four in the UK. Research within the School is focused around three interdisciplinary research groups:

  • Active Living and Rehabilitation
  • Cancer Palliative and End of Life Care
  • Organisation and Delivery of Care

All researchers belong to one of the research groups and they provide a managed environment where research teams share expertise and resources and also provide mentorship and support to individuals in developing their research. The School has superb facilities to support a range of clinical and health service related research activities with three research gait laboratories with state of the art measurement and data capture capabilities for our rehabilitation research programmes, and a unique nursing laboratory based at Southampton University Hospitals Trust.
